Mental Health Awareness Month: The Power of Words

Hello there Beauties!

How are you guys? This past week was hectic and overwhelming, so I hope everyone had a better week.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as an aspiring mental health advocate, I wanted to double down on one of the mental health resources that is free and incredibly important. Mental health awareness means being knowledgeable about the different kinds of mental illnesses, how to recognize them, how to treat them, and how to support your loved ones who are suffering.

I want to remind everyone that words hold so much weight, even more so than actions. There is so much behind the surface, so please be kind to everyone. There are so many stigmas and provocative/non-validating languages attached to mental health, and we need to be a society that learns to reshape our utterances so they become meaningful.

Last week I thought of something very insightful and wanted to share it here. Ever since I was a little girl, I have recognized and appreciated the beauty of my words. So much so that I started writing poetry for fun from a tender age. Back then, when life was simple, it was just a hobby; a nice way to get my thoughts out. I played around  It became more than a hobby when, in grade 6, someone asked me to write a poem for a competition, and it was very well received by their audience. That was when I recognized the power of my words.

Now that we’re in this social media era where everyone feels so powerful and free hiding behind a screen, I feel like we should be reminded that our words hold so much power and so much weight. Use your words to affirm someone, to encourage someone, to motivate someone, to compliment someone, or to remind someone that they’re not alone in their struggle. With this freedom of speech, it costs absolutely nothing to be kind.

If you or anyone you know is struggling, numerous resources can help. If you’re in Jamaica, you can message the Equality Youth Helpline on WhatsApp at 876-399-4357 or email them at helpline.eyj@gmail.com.
