Happy New Year to One and All!
Can y’all believe it’s almost the end of yet another year? 2024 has almost come to and end, and the new year 2025 is fast approaching.
I want us to all take some time.
Take the time to reflect on all the wins, the lessons, the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Reflection can give us hindsight (lessons learnt), insight (current habits that work), and foresight (knowledge to grow).
Take time to breathe, ‘blue skies in, gray skies out,’ or if you prefer something harsher: “inhale the good sh*t, exhale the bullsh*t.” Sometimes a breath is all we need - to focus, to redirect, to pivot, to think, to plan, to grieve, to love, to appreciate, to thank, to consider, to relax, to enjoy.
Take time to dream. If this year made you lose your spark, knock you off your footing, or threw you off track, the fact that you’re alive is proof of second chances. Some life out deh fi live enuh people, it exist, mi seet clear!
Take time to celebrate — ALL the wins — even the ones that didn’t even feel like wins because they seemed insignificant. You’ve made it to another year, and if that’s all you did, then celebrate it. I’m so happy for you, and so incredibly proud. Many people did not live to enjoy this privilege, and we must recognize that as a tremendous win.
Take time to grieve. While you acknowledge your accomplishments, also spend some time reflect on all the lessons learnt this year. Something my boyfriend often repeated like a mantra when we first met was, “No losses, only lessons.” It stuck with me because we never truly lose if we get the opportunity to learn, grow, and try again.
Let’s start 2025 with learning from the mistakes made, growing with lessons learnt, and trying again with experience.
Have you guys watched the popular Netflix show Squid Games? If you haven’t, it follows the story of 456 people who are in ridiculous debt and impossible situations. They are all backed up to a walk with no other alternatives. In their desperation, they are invited to play six games over the course of six days for a chance to win some money. The games are all simple games intended for kids, but what they aren’t told at the start is that if you lose, you die. They end up fighting to survive.
For 2025, instead of following the tradition of making impossible New Years Resolutions, or bingo cards that are starting to get popular on TikTok, or vision boards, how about we handle each task, each job, each challenge like the squid games? You either give it your all, give it your best, or you die. I mean, it’s okay if you opt to go the traditional route. I tend to make some goals myself (SMART goals), and sometimes it gives me hope. However, I want to be the best version of myself. I want to force myself to live life as fiercely, as passionately, as thrilling as it comes. After all, they do say you only live once, but that’s a lie. You actually live everyday, you die but once. I want to not just exist, I want to live a meaningful, beautiful, and fulfilling life. So, here’s to either giving it my best or dying from mediocrity (one of my biggest fears is not having a legacy, or not living a meaningful, impactful life).
As we reflect, breathe, dream, celebrate, and grieve, let us also try to live. As mi seh, mi nah ask if life nuh out deh fi live, mi KNOW it out deh. So give life your best shot for 2025. Chase the biggest dreams, do the scary thing, love unconditionally, forgive yourself, grow, and shine like the star you are.
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas (Happy Holidays if you don’t celebrate) and I wish for everyone a prosperous New Year.
QOTD: Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? If you do, do you generally make them work?
Love from all ends,
Bella
