Ebbs and Flows
This week has been so trying— so many different instances where I felt like “why is this happening to me?” However, I’m practicing the art of being still. Growing up, my mom used proverbs religiously. She would often say, “yuh cah bawl ova spilt milk” which loosely translates to “whatever happened has already happened, and there’s no use dwelling on it.” So in the midst of everything that has been going on, I’ve just let things be. Of course mi bawl like the world did ago end, but, I’ve let things be.
Have you ever heard the term “ebbs and flows of life?” Ebb and flow typically refers to the movement of the tide. According to Grammarly (2023), the tide's movement is where the term "ebbs and flows" originates. The tide's movement away from the shore is known as the ebb, and its movement back toward the shore is known as the flow.
It’s an idiom that can be likened to life. It has its ups and downs, and its highs and lows. When our lives “ebb” and things don’t seem to be going the way we’d hope, or we’re not getting the answers we need, or we’re down and out or feeling low, we can trust in the divine process that there comes and time when it will “flow.” Things will pick back up, things will work themselves out, everything will be okay.
Oprah Winfrey once said, “I trust in the ebb and flow of the universe. I trust that life’s bigger than what I can see. I trust that there is a divine order beyond my control. And I trust that no matter what happens, I will be all right.”
I will be alright. The word for my life has been hope for a while. (I choose a new word every year — I haven’t chosen one for this year as yet — and this word typically helps me to put things into perspective). Hope — the belief that something good will happen. I’ll hold on to that for dear life.
QOTD: Do you believe that things will always work out? Why/ why not?
Love from all ends,
Bella
